Obstetric Ultrasound In Melbourne
Precious Glimpse, in collaboration with Precious Health Radiology, provides obstetric ultrasound services that combine state-of-the-art technology with a warm, intimate, and supportive experience for expectant parents and their unborn baby. Whether you’re attending for a medical or routine scan, or an elective ultrasound, Precious Glimpse is committed to creating a relaxed, boutique-style environment.
The How And Why Of Ultrasounds
Ultrasounds use inaudible and low-power sound waves to capture detailed, real-time images and videos of unborn babies.
The ultrasound probe sends sound waves through your body, and records the returning echoes. Our state-of-the-art technology converts these waves into high-quality images and videos that our radiologist uses to prepare a report.
Ultrasounds reveal a wealth of information including the health and development of the unborn baby (or babies); their sex; an estimated delivery date; and evaluation of the blood flow in the umbilical cord, baby or placenta.
Preparation And When To Arrive
All medical pregnancy scans require a valid referral from your healthcare provider. We accept all referral letters, giving you the flexibility to choose the obstetrician, GP, or midwife who best suits your needs. If you have a referral, please submit it at least 4 days before your appointment to ensure a smooth booking process.
If you don’t have one, simply download our digital referral and have it completed by your chosen medical provider. Please ensure that all details—including the doctor’s name, provider number, your personal information, and the requested ultrasound service—are clearly legible.
Before your scan, confirm your Medicare eligibility or check your private health insurance coverage to determine if you’re entitled to a Medicare rebate or reimbursement. By ensuring your referral and insurance details are in order, you can focus on the most important aspect of your journey—your baby’s health and wellbeing.
You must have a full bladder before you arrive for your scan. We can view your uterus and ovaries more clearly when your bladder is full. Please drink 1 litre of water one hour before the appointment and please hold your bladder until our sonographer gives further instruction.
We recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access to the area being examined. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to allow time for your referral to be checked and for any questions you may have to be addressed.
What To Expect
When you arrive, you’ll fill out a brief form noting details such as your last menstrual period, if known. Our experienced sonographer will call you into the scanning room and explain the procedure, ensuring you feel fully prepared.
1. Abdomen:
In this method, you’ll lie comfortably on an examination table. A water-soluble gel is applied to your abdomen, and the sonographer will gently move the ultrasound probe over the area to capture clear images of the uterus and developing baby. A full bladder often helps achieve more detailed results, as it provides a better window for imaging.
2. Vaginal:
In some cases, especially very early in pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound may provide clearer images. You’ll be asked to empty your bladder and change into a gown. A sterile, covered probe is carefully inserted into the vagina. By adjusting the probe’s angle and pressure, the sonographer can obtain detailed views of the uterus, ovaries, and developing embryo. This method often yields more accurate images, ensuring you receive the most precise information about your baby’s early growth.
What To Bring
On the day of the appointment, please bring along your physical copy of the referral and your Medicare card to your appointment.
Results
Your images will be carefully reviewed by one of our radiologists, and a detailed report will be prepared for your referring health practitioner within 48 hours (excluding emergencies).
The report will be sent directly to your referring provider via fax or email. To ensure timely follow-up and care, please have an appointment booked with your referring health practitioner to discuss your results.
