Our services
Cone beam CT
Cone beam CT uses x-rays to generate a three-dimensional image of the outside and inside of teeth, the jaw and surrounding bones, the nasal cavity and sinuses.
The x-rays are directed to your face in the shape of a cone – inspiring the procedure’s names – using specialised equipment. The equipment moves around your face, enabling a series of two-dimensional images to be captured from different angles. Our state-of-the-art technology compiles this information into a precise three-dimensional image that our radiologist uses to prepare a report.
Cone beam CT is used by dental professionals for a range of complex dental and facial cases including evaluation of the jaw and nasal cavity, diagnosis of dental conditions and causes of pain of unknown origin, and planning treatments and placement of dental implants. This procedure is only used when traditional dental x-rays are insufficient or unsuitable.
No preparation is required for cone beam CT; some items around your face and neck may need to be removed at the appointment – our radiographer will advise you at the appointment. We recommend arriving 5-10 minutes before your appointment to ensure that any questions can be answered and your referral can be checked.
It is important to us that your appointment is comfortable and anxiety-free. We have created welcoming and soothing waiting and examination rooms that feel more like home than a clinic.
When you arrive at Precious Health, you will be welcomed by one of our medical receptionists. At your appointment, our radiographer will introduce themselves, and take you to one of our welcoming and relaxed cone beam CT rooms. It will contain the cone beam CT equipment; chairs (including for accompanying family, friends, and/or carers); soft music; and beautiful plants and paintings. We will provide a wheelchair to assist with mobility on request.
Our radiographer will discuss with you which metal objects around your face and neck may need to be removed for the examination (including spectacles, hearing aids, jewelry, hairpins, and removable dental work). They will provide you with a box to place your belongings in. A gown will be provided where necessary.
Next, you will be invited to stand at the cone beam CT – please advise the radiographer if you would like assistance. You will be asked to place your head on a chin rest and bite down gently on a sterile plastic mouthpiece to keep your teeth and jaw in the right position. You will also be asked to keep your head and jaw still, so that high-quality images can be taken.
The equipment’s rotating arm will move around (but not touching) your face while the radiographer takes the images. It is a relatively quiet and quick process, taking a few minutes to collect in total. The radiographer will assess each image to ensure it is high quality. It is a non-invasive and painless procedure.
Throughout the appointment, the radiographer will talk you through the procedure, what is happening, and why. We encourage you to let us know if you have any concerns or feel uncomfortable at any time.
At the end of the appointment, you can put on anything that needed to be removed for the examination.

One of our radiologists will review the images and, within 48 hours (unless an emergency), prepare a report for your referring health practitioner. This procedure is painless and non-invasive. It uses radiation – while excessive radiation levels can increase the risk of cancer, the radiation from a single cone beam CT scan is not usually considered to be harmful. The levels are lower than a standard CT scan, and higher than a traditional x-ray, which is why it is used only when medically necessary. However, please inform our radiographer if you are, or think you might be, pregnant: as there is a small risk that the radiation could harm the unborn baby, pregnant women are generally advised to not have CT scans.
We prioritise patient safety. Our waiting and examination rooms are equipped with Dyson [model type] HEPA air purifiers and our radiographers are trained in their use. Patient beds and chairs are sanitized with wipes between appointments, and radiographers wear surgical masks. Our employees access sick leave when they experience cold, flu or gastro-like symptoms.

Dental x-ray (OPG)
OPGs use x-rays to produce a panoramic or wide view image of your lower face, teeth and jaws.
The equipment moves around your face enabling a series of two-dimensional images to be captured from different angles. Our state-of-the-art technology compiles this information into a detailed, wide view image that our radiologist uses to prepare a report.
Dental x-rays are a routine procedure to monitor the health of your teeth, mouth, gums and jaws, and diagnose a range of conditions including gum disease; hidden decay and cavities; tumours and cysts; fractures; and abnormal teeth and jaw development.
No preparation is required for dental x-rays; some items around your face and neck may need to be removed at the appointment – our radiographer will advise you at the appointment. We recommend arriving 5-10 minutes before your appointment to ensure that any questions can be answered and your referral can be checked.

Next, you will be invited to sit on the comfortable dental x-ray chair – please advise the radiographer if you would like assistance. You will be asked to place your head on a chin rest and bite down gently on a sterile plastic mouthpiece to keep your teeth and jaw in the right position. You will also be asked to keep your head and jaw still, so that high-quality images can be taken.

General ultrasound
Ultrasounds use inaudible and low-power sound waves to capture detailed, real-time images and videos of tissues and organs, including the heart, liver, breasts, muscles, and tendons.
The ultrasound probe sends sound waves through your body, and records the returning echoes. Our state-of-the-art technology converts these waves into high-quality images and videos that our radiologist uses to prepare a report.
Ultrasound enables examination, diagnosis and monitoring of a range of conditions such as pregnancy, muscle tears, lumps and growths, blood flow and clotting, heart disease, and joint inflammation. It can also be used to guide injections and biopsies.
Many ultrasounds require no preparation. However, fasting for up to eight hours or drinking water may be necessary, depending on which part of your body will be examined. You may also need to hold your bladder until after the images are taken. Our medical receptionist can provide these instructions when you book your appointment.
We recommend wearing loose and comfortable clothing. And, we suggest arriving 5-10 minutes before your appointment to ensure that any questions can be answered and your referral can be checked.

Our sonographer will discuss with you what clothing and jewelry may need to be removed for the examination. They will provide you with a box to place your belongings in, and an examination gown to wear or a sheet where appropriate. There are curtains behind which you can change. Assistance can be provided by request.
Next, you will be invited to lie or sit on the scanning bed, depending on the procedure. Our sonographer will apply a water-based gel, which assists with the imaging, to the area being examined. They will place a hand-held ultrasound probe on your body and take images. They may move the probe or apply some pressure to capture a better image, which may feel uncomfortable but should not hurt. You may be asked to change positions or adjust your breathing, depending on the procedure. You may also be asked to hold and/or empty your bladder.
Some procedures require the insertion of a transvaginal probe. If this is the case, you will be provided with a consent form, and can change behind a curtain.
The images usually take 20-60 minutes to collect; our medical receptionist will let you know how long it will take. The sonographer will assess each image to ensure it is high quality.
Throughout the appointment, the sonographer will talk you through the procedure, what is happening, and why. We encourage you to let us know if you have any concerns or feel uncomfortable at any time.
At the end of the appointment, you will be provided with paper towel to wipe off the gel. You can change back into your clothes.

Obstetric ultrasound

Ultrasounds reveal a wealth of information including the health and development of the unborn baby (or babies); their sex; an estimated delivery date; and evaluation of the blood flow in the umbilical cord, baby or placenta.
Minimal preparation is required. You may need to drink lots of water so your bladder is full for the scan so it is easier to see your unborn baby, or empty your bladder – our medical receptionist will let you know depending on the procedure. Please stay hydrated for one week before your scan by consuming 7-10 glasses of water daily, which enables better quality images.

X-ray
This procedure uses x-rays, a particular type of light that is invisible to our eyes, to create an image of inside a body.
The x-rays are sent through the part of your body being examined using specialised equipment. Different structures in your body, including bones and soft tissues, absorb different amounts of x-rays, which creates contrast in the image that our radiologist uses to prepare a report.
General x-rays are used diagnose and monitor a range of diseases and injuries including fractures, bone density, cancers, bowel blockage, and congestive heart failure. They can also reveal the location of swallowed foreign objects, and tubes, wires and leads placed during a surgical procedure.
No preparation is required for a general x-ray, although we recommend wearing comfortable clothing for mobility. We suggest arriving 5-10 minutes before your appointment to ensure that any questions can be answered and your referral can be checked.

Next, you will be invited to sit on the comfortable x-ray chair or stand, depending on which area of your body is being examined – please advise the radiographer if you would like assistance. People who use a wheelchair may need to be moved to the x-ray chair if the metal parts of the wheelchair will interfere with the images.
The radiographer may provide you with a protective shield or apron to wear, if it is necessary for the procedure. You will be asked to keep still, and possibly hold your breath, so that high-quality images can be taken. The radiographer will assess each image to ensure it is high quality.
X-rays are fairly quick to take, and usually take one to five minutes depending on the number of images being taken. It is a non-invasive and painless procedure.

Bookings and secure appointments
Precious Health Radiology offers minimal to no-waiting time appointments during after hours, excluding weekends and public holidays. This means we will hold your booking so that you don’t have to wait, except in the case of emergency bookings.
All official medical reports will be delivered to your referring provider within 48 hours, excluding weekends and public holidays. We can provide preliminary reports if requested by your referring provider.
